Simple and Timeless

For many of us, the way we dress is an expression of our personality. It’s easy, and understandable, to want to wear outfits that represent you for your session. However, the goal of these sessions is to create a timeless piece of art for you to remember this stage of your life. With that in mind, aim to dress in classic, neutral colors (think white, creamy beige, elegant black) and avoid patterns and busy designs.

One of the best styles to show off your bump is a maternity gown (you can take your pick from the studio closet) but if you opt not to wear a gown, then a simple, form-fitting top, and layered, feminine textures would be most flattering.

Keep Your Options Open

A lot of planning and preparation takes place before your shoot, and part of that is being prepared for quick and easy outfit changes by wearing simple tank tops and button-up shirts in classic colors. These are also great for layering so that you can stay comfortable even if there are changes in temperature in the studio, or on location. Also, what you wear under your clothes is just as important. A nude bra and underwear are recommended to keep options open for outfits with more sheer fabric.

Outfit Ideas For Your Partner

Speaking of planning, most of the planning revolves around what mommy and baby will wear. This makes sense, of course, because you and your tiny little bundle of sweetness are the highlight of each photo session. However, we want to make sure that your partner and baby’s siblings are styled perfectly for your shoot as well. Mommy’s outfit will be chosen first, and then your partner and other children should be styled to compliment your look. Solid, neutral colors work best. For your guy, a classic white shirt and jeans will create a natural look that compliments most outfit choices for mom.

Talk to Your Photographer

Your first stop to get ideas for your styling your session should be me, your photographer! I can give you tips on the best colors to compliment your skin tone, color and fabric ideas for your partner and other children to compliment you beautifully, and what style will work best to evoke the tone and feeling you want to see reflected in your photos.

Studio Closet

One thing I love to mention to my clients is the fact that the studio closet has some gorgeous maternity gowns that are available for you to use for your photo shoot. If you’re interested in taking advantage of it, I suggest that you come into the studio to take a look for yourself and select the gown that most suits you. Everything in the closet has been proven to photograph beautifully, and most of the designs are handmade by talented designers from the U.S. and Europe.

Creating Classic Looks

Part of my job is staying informed of the latest styles and techniques to offer my clients the best possible experience. I have taken courses and learned draping techniques to use fancy fabrics in many ways to create high-end, couture looks similar to those that have been featured in fashion magazines for decades. As I mentioned, simple, timeless looks never go out of style.
